Simply put, Mission: Impossible – Fallout is the best action thriller of the summer. Combining elaborate and exciting action sequences with a character drama that explores the psyche of undercover agent Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) and his IMF teammates (Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames and Alec Baldwin), as well as wild card agents (Henry Cavill, Rebecca Ferguson) and more (Angela Bassett, Vanessa Kirby, Michelle Monaghan, Sean Harris) adds up to an intoxicating mix that proved irresistible at the box office this weekend. The film earned $61 million, a franchise high and also the second highest opening for Cruise.
So, yes, Mission: Impossible – Fallout sets a very high standard for the next three action thrillers that will follow its path into movie theaters. Yet each one promises its own unique blend of ingredients to lure moviegoers back in front of big screens nationwide. Here’s our take on what’s coming up.
We could reduce this to “Jason Statham vs. Giant Shark” and be perfectly happy munching our popcorn while the action star confronts his fears in order to save people trapped in a sunken submersible. Yet the thriller also teases the presence of stalworth supporting players like Ruby Rose, Li Bingbing, Cliff Curtis and Rainn Wilson.
Plus … oh, let’s not kid around: we just want to see Jason Statham take on the biggest shark we’ve even seen. The action should be mostly underwater, which should offer a refreshing update of familiar tropes. Look for The Meg in theaters on August 10, 2018.
Throughout his career, filmmaker Albert Hughes has twisted expectations with action thrillers like Dead Presidents, From Hell and The Book of Eli, working in collaboration with his brother Allen Hughes. Now for his first solo feature effort, Albert Hughes heads 20,000 years into the past.
We’ve seen prehistoric action tales before, but this time the story is focused on the relationship between a young man, played by Kodi Smit-McPhee (Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, X-Men: Apocalypse), and a wolf who becomes his fierce companion. The epic adventure will open in theaters on August 17, 2018.
Shane Black made an auspicious debut as a screenwriter with Lethal Weapon and The Monster Squad, both released in 1987. That same year, Black also played a key role as an actor in Predator. Now he’s reteamed with The Monster Squad cowriter Fred Dekker on the script for The Predator, described as a reinvention of the series.
For his fourth feature as a director — following Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Iron Man 3 and The Nice Guys — Black has assembled a powerhouse cast: Boyd Holbrook, Trevante Rhodes, Jacob Tremblay, Keegan-Michael Key, Olivia Munn, Sterling K. Brown, Alfie Allen, Thomas Jane and Yvonne Strahovski. The action will be apocalyptic this time, featuring stronger and smarter lethal hunters pitted against mankind’s last hope, a ragtag crew pushed to their limits. The thriller will open on September 14, 2018.
