“This is my house, I have to defend it.” So said young Kevin McCallister (Macaulay Culkin) in Chris Columbus’ classic comedy Home Alone, written by John Hughes.
That also appears to be the guiding principle behind Stoned Alone, which aims to be an R-rated take on the original idea. How is Ryan Reynolds involved? Read onward for all we know about the new comedy project.
What’s it about?
According to Deadline, the film “centers around a twenty-something weed growing loser who misses the plane for his holiday ski trip. He makes the best of things by getting high. Paranoia sets in and he believes he hears someone break into his house. Turns out thieves have broken in. Fully stoned and fueled by paranoia, he tries to thwart the thieves and defend his castle.”
Kevin Burrows and Matt Mider wrote the screenplay. It’s based on an idea by Matt Reilly, an executive at Fox, the studio that also produced Home Alone.
Who is producing?
Ryan Reynolds is attached to produce. The actor previously served as executive producer on a documentary (The Whale) and a TV movie (Murder in Manhattan). More recently, he was integrally involved in the success of Deadpool and Deadpool 2 as a producer (and co-writer on the latter).
Reynolds has also been involved in the development of a new Clue, inspired by the popular board game. He’s also serving as an executive producer on the upcoming superhero adventure X-Force.
Who is directing?
Augustine Frizzell. She wrote and directed Never Goin’ Back, which debuted at the Sundance Film Festival to positive acclaim earlier this year and is heading for theatrical release on August 3. (Watch the red-band, not safe for work trailer below.) She is an actress who previously directed several short films and is currently prepping high-school drama Euphoria for HBO.
Who might star?
There is no indication that Reynolds is considering a starring role. As written, the lead role is intended for a “twenty-something” actor and, though the forty-something Reynolds still looks great, he’s already done those type of roles earlier in his career.
So, the field is open for a younger actor to inhabit the role. The premise sells itself, which also means the actor selected doesn’t need to be widely known yet.
When might we be able to see it?
It sounds like the movie is ready to start casting. If so, it could hit theaters late in 2019 or early in 2020.
